The NEW GOP Playbook: “Suppress the Suppression”
“The first thing we have to do is take the monkey wrench that the court threw in it, out of the Voting Rights Act, and then
use that monkey wrench to be able to fix it so that it is alive, well, constitutional and impervious to another challenge that will be filed by the usual suspects,”
(R-WI Rep. James Sensenbrenner on August 26, 2013)
Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) made a huge splash at the 50th-Year Republican commemoration of the March on Washington when he vowed to restore the recently-gutted Voting Rights
Act by the Supreme Court. RNC Chairman Reince Preibus followed Sensenbrenner’s speech with a smile (wink wink) saying that his friend just made some news.
is an important development in the voting rights for many disenfranchised minority voters. This is what I call a GOP End Run. The Republicans are seeing the light when it comes to trying to PULL IN voters not PUSH THEM away. That is what Sensenbrenner
and more moderate GOP Politicians like McCain and Mike Enzi (Montana) have been quietly reiterating to their fellow Republicans.
The disconnect of state and national party interests comes mostly at the state levels where GOP legislatures have literally been in a panic since President Obama was first elected in 2008. Texas and North Carolina GOP-run legislatures seem to be under the notion that if minorities can’t vote, Democrats can’t win. They are doing everything they can like closing on-campus polling places, Voter ID Cards, the contesting of state residence for students. The list goes on and on.
I want to remind our Republican friends that President Obama cannot run for President again and the likeliness of the next President ALSO being an African American is not too great. Hillary Clinton (a woman) already has southern roots. I believe you will see an about face now that Sensenbrenner has broken the ice.
He said he will do everything in his power to restore the gutted Voting Rights Act BEFORE the end of the calendar year. This is big news and really a NO BRAINER if the GOP ever wants to win and national elections again.
Former Secretary of State Colin Powell (a Republican) has been speaking out against these voter suppression movements himself. Powell is still well-respected.
When Republicans realize that these stringent laws will affect THEIR ability to vote, there will be an uproar in these states.
I suggest that Democrats now let nature take its course and move on to other issues that affect their pocketbooks directly right now. I believe the GOP will undo this mess because it suits THEIR needs and could give a rats ass about disenfranchising minorities. They had better start caring the way the census is rapidly changing in its numbers to display more and more minorities. The white man will be in the minority in 10 years. Pay attention people….
