Marc Platt's Politics: I'm a Lefty

Sep. 19, 2013

"If you want to talk about character and American values, fine. Just tell me where and when, and I'll show up. This is a time for serious people, Bob, and your fifteen minutes are up. My name is Andrew Shepherd, and I AM the President." (Michael Douglas, Aaron Sorkin's 'The American President' 1995)

In the real universe that we live in, President Barack Obama will NEVER repeal his own Affordable Care Act. Speaker John Boehner continually calls Obamacare a "failed law" that we must defund and repeal. It is the ONLY card he can play. Obama has three aces in his hand. Boehner has a pair of 2s.

Eric Cantor is in similar shape. These two guys have to answer to some 20-odd Tea Party members who are keeping them from doing anything OTHER than trying to defund a law that is already in the books and will be further in the mainstream on October 1.

Obama is taking the offensive against the GOP for trying to extort the government by threatening to shut it down if he doesn't repeal his own legacy law.

Obama WILL let them shut the government down. They will lose the House in 2014 midterm elections. Nancy Pelosi will return to her former post of House Speaker. The GOP is gambling with their future as a party and that may be the best thing that could happen to them. They will seriously have to reorganize once the Tea Party element is lessened.

Let's talk Ted Cruz. Obamacare is the ONLY thing he can try to use against Obama. Obama IS the President of the United States, NOT Ted Cruz. Ted ruz will NEVER be the President. He is delusional in his approach. Mr. Obama is much smarter than Cruz politically and will put him out of business for good in this second term.

Boehner and Cantor continually have to butt heaqds with each other AND Tea Party elected officials who only care about blowing Washington up politically. Do the American people REALLY want a government that cannot take care of the people who can't? Do they really want to turn America into a "Blade Runner" rudderless society that is truly run by corporations?

Mr. Obama is setting the stage for a huge showdown with Boeher and Cantor. Obama will win. They will lose and the American people will just have to trust that Obama's administration will maneuver their way through this near impossible battlefield.

As I have been saying in previous blogs, Obama knew what he was doing all along with Syria. He played the press, congress and even the American public with a grand bluff about bombing Syria. I still insist he NEVER had any intention of bombing Syria. Obama and Putin cooked this plan up and executed it. Kerry did a fantastic job selling our threat and even Hillary Clinton helped reinforcing Obama and Kerry's threat. It was masterful and will go down (later) in the history books as a brilliant manuever.

The liberal and right-wing press bought into the threat and riled the people up. Russia did what they intended to do all along...Rid Assad of those chemical weapons. They certainly didn't want the rebels getting their hands on them, or Iran.

All the while, Boehner and Cantor did NOTHING. The only thing they can do these days is appease the far right Tea Party peeps. They are the stupidist men in our government for NOT getting a handle on these people in January, 2011.

Good luck boys with this Debt Ceiling Showdown!

June 23, 2014 Update:

This is the 2nd time I have updated this Blogpiece. Today (6/23/14) Syria completed turning over all of its declared chemical weapons and none too soon. ISIS will NOT be able to seize these weapons BECAUSE President Obama prevented that from happening by outsmarting our own Congress and the neocons like McCain, Ayotte and Graham who have NO CLUE what they are talking about when it comes to our foreign policy. They don't govern, so they flap their lips about war, etc...

You cvan debate me all you want on this, but I saw what was really going on last summer when it was going down in real time anbd I am no expert on foreign policy. What I DO know is I trust this this administration a hell of a lot more than the last one. This is one "I told you so" I'm proud of....{#smileys123.tonqueout}

Update: September 10, 2013...Assad Took The Deal that the Russians gave them and they will avert the strikes Obama threatened. Diplomacy can work in 2013...

"Turn it over... all of it...." (regarding Assad's chemical weapons)

John Kerry (September 9, 2013)

Go back and see how the Cuban Missile episode played out. When countries have issues like America, Russia, Syria & Iran, there are often threats made. A lot of stuff THEN gets worked out diplomatically. Russia has JUST stepped in and tried to get Assad to abandon the WMDs.  Russia talks tough, but do not really want to engage this way.

Pay attention to what President Obama REALLY is doing and just don't react because you are afraid we are doing a NEW "Iraq War." That is not what is going on folks.

The President can either be crippled by the dysfunction of Congress, or do an end around. Don't forget that Obama can pick up the phone and get Putin on the line at any time. Putin takes the call.

It benefits Russia to have the U.S. as a player AND Syria. Mr. Putin holds a lot of cards in his hand when it comes to Syria. Assad desperately needs Putin's support.

Giving up the Chemical Weapons at this point is a no brainer for Assad, because if he uses them, we WILL bomb him with or without Congress approving.

I previously wrote that Obama would probably hit Syria, but that was before Obama took the brilliant move of buying time before he left the country. President Obama probably NEVER had the intention of bombing Syria. I believe he took a page out of JFK's playbook and keeps buying time until Russia reacts. That is what they did with Cuba. That is what they are doing with Syria.

Syria is busted and Obama does not want to bust out. Diplomatic solutions are what is going on. No war. You heard it here.

UPDATE (9/3/13): Boehner, Cantor & McCain are now BACKING Obama:

Boehner: "I'm going to support the president's call for action. I believe my colleagues should support this call for action...We have enemies around the world that need to understand that we're not going to tolerate this type of behavior."

Cantor: "America has a compelling national security interest to prevent and respond to the use of weapons of mass destruction, especially by a terrorist state such as Syria, and to prevent further instability in a region of vital interest to the United States."

(My Original Post 8/30/13)

"I will seek authorization for the use of force from the American people's representatives in Congress." (President Obama August 31, 2013)

This was a move by President Obama and his top advisers that may cement his legacy in this erratic beginning of a second term. It was brilliant.

Why, you ask?

Let's begin with the fact that he is about to go to the G8 summit with all the main characters like Putin, etc... He now can put off an immediate response for at least two weeks.

Congress doesn't even return until September 9. They get briefed, they debate and get whipped into going along. John McCain and Lindsay Graham get a chance to pull their Senate buddies into line. Boehner and Cantor actually can go more to the center and redeem themselves by playing ball with Obama on this one.

No one (remember Iraq) wants to make the WRONG decision. Obama thinks Congress should debate it. They will probably come down with some watered down response, BUT it will be the right thing to do.

Obama and his missiles kick some ass and then Assad does what he does best, kills MORE women and children and we REALLY bring some force down. It would be like once we start if they don't comply, the rest of the world will have no choice, but to go along with Obama.

If Assad were to gas more people or try to attack Israel with Iran, you would see a shift from the more neutral countries.

This American President knows what he is doing.

The GOP members who don't go along with Obama will be in even MORE danger politically.

Mr. Obama has three aces up his sleaves. That fourth ace is probably in his pocket for a rainy day.

“The first thing we have to do is take the monkey wrench that the court threw in it, out of the Voting Rights Act, and then use that monkey wrench to be able to fix it so that it is alive, well, constitutional and impervious to another challenge that will be filed by the usual suspects,”
(R-WI Rep. James Sensenbrenner on August 26, 2013)

Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) made a huge splash at the 50th-Year Republican commemoration of the March on Washington when he vowed to restore the recently-gutted Voting Rights Act by the Supreme Court.  RNC Chairman Reince Preibus followed Sensenbrenner’s speech with a smile (wink wink) saying that his friend just made some news.

This is an important development in the voting rights for many disenfranchised minority voters. This is what I call a GOP End Run.  The Republicans are seeing the light when it comes to trying to PULL IN voters not PUSH THEM away. That is what Sensenbrenner and more moderate GOP Politicians like McCain and Mike Enzi (Montana) have been quietly reiterating to their fellow Republicans.

The disconnect  of state and national party interests comes mostly at the state levels where GOP legislatures have literally been in a panic since President Obama was first elected in 2008. Texas and North Carolina GOP-run legislatures seem to be under the notion that if minorities can’t vote, Democrats can’t win. They are doing everything they can like closing on-campus polling places, Voter ID Cards, the contesting of state residence for students. The list goes on and on.

I want to remind our Republican friends that President Obama cannot run for President again and the likeliness of the next President ALSO being an African American is not too great. Hillary Clinton (a woman) already has southern roots. I believe you will see an about face now that Sensenbrenner has broken the ice.

He said he will do everything in his power to restore the gutted Voting Rights Act BEFORE the end of the calendar year. This is big news and really a NO BRAINER if the GOP ever wants to win and national elections again.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell (a Republican) has been speaking out against these voter suppression movements himself. Powell is  still well-respected.

When Republicans realize that these stringent laws will affect THEIR ability to vote, there will be an uproar in these states.

I suggest that Democrats now let nature take its course and move on to other issues that affect their pocketbooks directly right now. I believe the GOP will undo this mess because it suits THEIR needs and could give a rats ass about disenfranchising minorities. They had better start caring the way the census is rapidly changing in its numbers to display more and more minorities. The white man will be in the minority in 10 years. Pay attention people….

“You know the score pal. If you're not a cop, you're little people!”

(Blade Runner, 1982)

Update: "Shooter at the Gate" song by Marc Platt

It is not race that is driving the senseless crime rate in America by armed youths. The Christopher Lane case in Oklahoma and the Delbert Belton case in Seattle, as well as the Georgia would-be school shooter (Michael Hill) are more or less due to hopelessness. In Florida, a trucking magnate was shot and killed along with a fellow employee by a retired employee who then killed himself. These horrific incidents are becoming more commonplace in America.

Is anyone surprised that poor youths with no hope of education or job security are roaming the streets with weapons looking for trouble? Can we possibly be surprised that people like the troubled man in Florida would resort to killing his former employer in desperation?

It is easy for these people to get guns and ammo. This is a fact.

Adam Lanza (Newtown shooter) and Michael Hill (Georgia would be shooter) were both emotionally-challenged and had easy access to weapons they really had no business handling.

Michael Hill, who was talked down from shooting up a school in Georgia was on probation and had a history of mental illness. The three youths (1 white, 2 black) in Oklahoma shot Christopher Lane, 23, because they were “bored.” Their NEXT intended target was an African American kid. The father called the police and they were nabbed outside of their house before the three youths could carry that killing out.

The climate in urban America has turned into the Wild West with youths being armed and the NRA condoning it politically by making it possible for them to be armed in the first place. I won’t go on a liberal rant about this. The NRA is only PART of the problem.

How many stories have we heard lately about children accidentally killing other children or themselves handling handguns?

The government (local and national) have exhibited ineptness in dealing with these issues. They are beholden to the NRA for the money that gets pumped into their campaigns for doing nothing.

Parents have their hands tied with the shrinking economy and a lot less supervision. The Social Media Age has accelerated kids maturing in certain ways, but not “SOCIALLY.” If they are not taught respect and proper values, they will continue to spiral out of control.

The stronger the family unit, the less likely their child will resort to hunting humans out of boredom. The consequences obviously aren’t too much of a deterrent when it comes to these crimes. They are happening far too frequently.
