Marc Platt's Politics: I'm a Lefty

Aug. 13, 2013

a. To make an accusation against.
b. To charge (a public official) with improper conduct in office before a proper tribunal.

How do you make a name for yourself if you are a Texas Republican Congressman with no distintive record in congress, so far?

You can start by telling your constituents at a small Town Hall that it would probably not be productive to impeach Obama: "if we were to impeach the President tomorrow, you could probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to do it. But it would go to the Senate and he wouldn’t be convicted,” according to Texas GOP Congressman Jake Farenthold.

This wahoo won't tell anyone exactly what the impeachable offense is. Impeach basically means accuse, bring to trial...FOR WHAT? Passing Obamacare against HIS frigging vote???

This is nothing more than Red Meat to the Republican base...That is what this is all about. In 2009, the Tea Party went to town on President Obama on the then-proposed Affordable Health Care bill which later became law. They organized people to disrupt Town Halls with End-Of-The_world urgency that there would be "Death Panels" and all sorts of armagedon if Obamacare passed. Oy veh.

Mr. Farenthold is just one among many U.S. Representatives using these scare tactics during the congressional recess. I'm not going to go through the list of Red Meat tatctics they are using this time around. I will also spare you the details on Farenthold's "Birther" comments. OK just one  “I think unfortunately the horse is already out of the barn on this, on the whole birth certificate issue. The original Congress when his eligibility came up should have looked into it and they didn’t. I’m not sure how we fix it.”

2014 is just around the corner. The question in the midterm elections that will be answered is...Just how good is the voter suppression movement been in protecting GOP House seats? How many GOP govedrnors will lose their jobs because of Abortion and Social Issues? Will the Dems hold the Senate this time around?

This is what we are sending our representatives to Washington for. ONLY to protect THEIR jobs and THEIR ideology, not ours. Use your common sense. Politics is a business not "Of the people, by the people and for the people," but rather the lucky few who know how to jack the system.

"Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it." (President Dwight David Eisenhower)

Ike was a GREAT Republican, a great politician and an underrated U.S. President. He would be considered too liberal to even be a Democrat in 2013, which is sad. Ike was one of our greatest generals and as President, HATED war.

Ike once said:  "The problem in defense is how far you can go without destroying from within what you are trying to defend from without." This is really great stuff.

The crop of Republicans in Washington in today's Beltway could do themselves some good by going back and look at their history. When America has two STRONG political parties, we are better served. The citizens can actually make a choice to better their own pocketbooks with strong political leadership.

What we are seeing is obstructionism and racial bias against our first African American Commander In Chief. I would have thought this country would have evolved and grown up, but there is a "Quiet Racism" raging in all branches of the government and even in the Supreme Court.

I'm sick to death of spouting facts like Voter Suppression, Mainstreet Neglect, No Fair Wages and Stand Your Ground to name a few. You get the idea. It's all there right in front of us.

Congress is in session 129 TOTAL days in 2013. Eric Cantor is the man responsible for setting THAT calendar. John Boehner gets to decide what bills (IE Immigration, Gun Control) can be voted on in the house.

The anarchic Tea Party is hellbent on shutting the government down and putting forth their own idealogy. Texas Senator Ted Cruz is the leading jackass in Congress putting forth the obstructionism that has crippled the nation. People are still not getting jobs. Sequestration has done nothing but made life worse for Americans.

I don't want to rant on about how our deficit is lower than it was 5 years ago with a GDP growth of 2%. YET the GOP continues to live in an alternate universe saying that we "must cut entitlement programs" and they even have it in for food stamps and the recipients who depend on them.

One more Ike Quote: "History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid."

To this I say, Democrats..Stand up and fight these idiots. Moderate Republicans...Stop these guys from ruining our country. America vote these A-holes out of congress in 2014. Take the house back. The House of Representatives just had their token 40th vote to repeal the Affordable Health Care Act. Obamacare is the Law of the Land. Accept it.

This is not your grandfathers GOP. I met Ike as a 9-year-old just months before his death in 1969. My mom told me who he was. I started reading about Presidential history right then and there.

I have been a lifelong Democrat, but if Ike were around in this day and age, I'd consider voting for him for sure. Yes I know, he gave us Nixon. No one's perfect.

I am here today to again apologize for the personal mistakes I have made and the embarrassment I have caused. I make this apology to my neighbors and my constituents, but I make it particularly to my wife, Huma. (Anthony Weiner, 2011)

What a difference a few years makes, right?

I love New York. I live in L.A., but I love New York. There is so much good that this city is known for. They have survived Rudy G and his sexual escapades, they have thrived despite Spitzer and 9/11. I don't need to go over that again.

Ex-Congressman Anthony Weiner reminds me of an old George C. Scott movie called the "Flim Flam Man" (1967), where Scott really kicks ass doing all sorts of cons. You get the idea.

What is Weiner's con?

He knows he has no chance to win, yet he stays in and drags his poor wife Huma down.

Huma Abedin is Hillary Clintons TOP aide. Hillary will run for president in 2016 most likely and Abedin will be there with her. Anthony Weiner will not. The longer he goes on with this, the less likely his marriage is to survive the next few years.

This man has sexual addiction issues. It doesn't really sound like he is addressing THOSE issues and I don't see how Hillary Clinton would allow him anywhere NEAR the White House having gone through HER 1996-2000 debacle with her husband former President Bill Clinton.

Weiner is dragging Abedin through a muddy, media-driven campaign of HIS making. He has done NOTHING to help his cause. He keeps trying to turn it around saying that this will make him "A better Mayor." Oy veh.

Every day Weiner stays in the race, openly gay female candidate Christine Quinn looks MORE like the next mayor. She says and does everything right and the polls reflect it daily.

The ONLY thing standing in Quinn's way are (of all things) Democratic women. She is NOT polling well with them. Enter Bill Thompson, who will likely finish second to Quinn and force a run-off. So don't make her NY 's next mayor quite yet.

Let's get back to Weiner. What does he have to gain sticking around? Maybe a lobbying job, down the road? I really don't see him holding political office.

Looks like he just needs to feel relevant, but to do it while making his wife look this bad is quite a price to pay.

I would say "Shame on you Anthony Weiner," but he would probably embrace that.

When I was president, I announced and I still maintain that I can live with Roe v. Wade. I did everything I possibly could as president under that ruling, which I don't think ought to be changed, to minimize the need for abortions. I think every abortion is a result of a horrible series of errors on the part of people involved. (Former President, Jimmy Carter)

The Republican Party has a real problem on their hands. It is getting worse every day and they can't seem to do anything to stop it. The state-run Republican legislatures are systematically trying to circumvent the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision by making access to abortions and even women's reproductive services available in their states.

In Ohio, Governor John Kasich just signed a BUDGET with many draconian anti abortion laws written into the budget. The legislature threw the measures into the budget at the last minute with NO DEBATE on the floor of that state body. Kasich willingly and gleefully signed off on the budget and ALL the provisions with no line item vetos.

In Texas, Governor Rick Perry has recently called his second straight emergency session with the purpose of getting stringent abortion measures passed. Democratic State Senator Wendy Davis has become a national figure and official pain in Perry's ass with her recent 12-hour filibuster to thwart the first emergency session. Texas WILL get their draconian measures through this time out and successfully get 37 of the 42 state-run women's clinics closed. This WILL put Texas women at risk.

A bunch of states just had similar laws take effect in Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, Mississippi and South Dakota.

Another in Montana, and part of a law in Alabama, would have started, but it was blocked by federal court in that state.

All of these were passed by Republican-controlled state legislatures and signed by their GOP governors.

What we are dealing with is the states doing what the congress and senate can not do. If congress were to successfully kill abortion, they would never win another national election.

I would think with women getting picked on systematically like African Americans and gays for the past half century, the Republicans would back off before losing yet another national voting block, women.

Rick Perry and John Kasich have been playing this conservative Red Meat game for so long, they know no other way to survive in politics. Both men are going to find their poll numbers dropping over the next year. They will be alarmed at how many women will jump ship on them and gravitate towards new candidates like Wendy Davis and other empowered women politicians.

The national re-branding effort is really failing so far. That is why we don't hear a peep from House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell about what is going on in the states. You don't see them launching or backing NATIONAL bills to circumvent the current abortion laws.

These are serious times with serious issues. The recent SCOTUS rulings on DOMA and Prop. 8 are definitely progressive and movement. The destruction of the Voting Rights Act sections that affect voter registration need to be corrected by the national congress.

The MOST important thing our government and Supreme Court must examine, is making a uniform abortion and reproductive ruling that will prohibit political bodies from making these decisions for political idealogical reasons. They may have thwarted blacks voting, but what about women? Hillary Clinton is a woman and the frontrunner for 2016. Good luck Republicans. You have screwed yourselves out of future black support and women are next.

Women's bodies are THEIR business and no governor should be able to tell a woman what she can and can't do when it comes to these rights. It has been the law of the land since 1973. Look it up.

Addendum: North Carolina's Republican-run legislature tacked anti-abortion ammendments to a "Sharia Law" bill. YES IT'S TRUE! They are ramroding this through. (7/3/2013)

“My position with Booz Allen Hamilton granted me access to lists of machines all over the world the NSA hacked,” he said. “That is why I accepted that position about three months ago.”
(Edward Snowden, June, 2013)

Look whatever you think. However you feel about what the U.S. has been doing to keep it's citizens safe, you must contend that Edward Snowden deliberately set out to expose his employer and his country after taking an oath.

I have a problem with this. I expect people who are entrusted to do their jobs and it affects my family, friends and my own personal safety to do that job in the secrecy they are supposed to do it in. Snowden was contracted by an important company and knowingly took an oath to protect THAT company and THIS country, while conspiring to expose the practices.

If you steal a million dollars from your boss and give it all to a foodbank, does that make it right? Your purpose was noble (feed the poor), but your means are all screwed up. We don't live in Sherwood Forrest and Edward Snowden is NOT Robin Hood.

I have no problem that he is a follower of Ron Paul. I do have a problem with Snowden using his political leanings as a reason to break these laws and endanger his fellow citizens.

The man left the country. His father pleaded with him through the media NOT to divulge information that would put people in harms way. The fact that Putin went apeshit over the opportunity to stick it to the U.S., as well as China. This is BAD for us.

I'm sick to death of hearing 4th Amendment this, 4th Amendment that. I am much more concerned that my friends and family don't get blown up at a High School football game.

I would suggest taking a look at this episode for what it probably is. A crime.

If it were simply whistleblowing why would he run?

Also, did Mr. Snowden take into consideration that those two laptops with sensitive info that he stole may get confiscated by Russia, China, or whoever takes him in? Then what?

If this kid did this to become famous, I say well done young man. Well done.
